I am unemployed, what training can I follow while keeping the integration / unemployment benefits?

Here are the courses you can consider:

1. Work-study training

You will alternate between a part in a professional environment and another part within a training establishment. You will receive a limited remuneration but compatible with the allowances. And above all, at the end of this training, you will have a professional qualification.

To obtain your exemption, you must be fully unemployed and:

  • Either do not have a diploma or your CESS and have received the allowances for 6 months during the last 2 years preceding the start of the training;
  • Or train yourself in a job in short supply, the list of which is available on the Forem website, on the following page: Exemption to follow work-study training or training as a business manager or in coordination and supervision (leforem.be ) , and have benefited from 3 months of allowances during the last 2 years preceding the start of the training.

You can benefit from it only once, for a year, but the exemption can be extended if you have succeeded and continue the following year.

2. Training for an independent profession

The training courses are those organized by SYNTRA (in Flanders), IFAPME , the SME Training Service (SFPME) or IAWM (in the German-speaking Community). To obtain this exemption from the Forem, you must be fully unemployed and:

  • Either have completed studies or an apprenticeship for at least 2 years and have received at least one year of allowances during the 2 years preceding the start of training;
  • Or have received at least two years of allowances during the 4 years preceding the start of the training.

You can only benefit from it once, for one year, unless extended if successful.

Attention ! This exemption is not applicable in the German-speaking Community.

3. Vocational training

The courses covered by this exemption are:

  • Those organized or subsidized by FOREM – VDAB – ADG or IBFFP (Bruxelles Formation);
  • Individual training in a company or in an educational establishment recognized by FOREM (Wallonia) – VDAB (Flanders) – ADG (German-speaking Community) or IBFPP ( Brussels Training) and approved by the Director of the regional unemployment office of the ‘ONEM.

→ If you are interested in another type of training, you could possibly obtain an exemption if you can demonstrate that this training increases your chances of finding a job .

The training should take place during the week during the day. If the training is taken on weekdays after 5 p.m. or on Saturdays, you will keep the allowances if you continue to respect your obligations in parallel with the training (such as remaining registered as a jobseeker and remaining in possession of a control card duly completed).

Attention ! This exemption is not applicable in the German-speaking Community.

4. Other training

Specific exemptions may be accepted depending on certain criteria such as your age, your professional background, your studies already followed, etc. Know that the exemption is automatically granted for certain training offered by the Forem and provided for in your individual action plan.

Are you interested? So do not hesitate to contact the Forem who will give you all the information on the possibilities available to you.

5. On-the-job training

Would you like to train in an approved on-the-job training company? This is also possible provided that:

  • You are completely unemployed;
  • You do not have an upper secondary education diploma;
  • You have been registered as a job seeker for at least 6 months;
  • In the 6 months preceding the start of the training, you have neither followed full-time studies, nor successfully completed individual professional training in a company, nor worked more than 78 days as a salaried worker or more than one quarter as a self-employed person.

The exemption is granted for the duration of the training with a maximum of 18 months. As long as the maximum duration has not been exceeded, you can take advantage of it for several consecutive or non-consecutive trainings.

As you can see, a range of training offers you the chance to learn a trade and keep your rights. Qualifications are a key to employment. We wish you success in your project! 😉🤞
